Misunderstood

One thing I’ve always found fascinating it’s how much hatred is placed on Christianity and Christians. Why is that? After all, almost every person in the world holds Christian values near to their heart: Atheists, Non-Believers, Buddhists, or any other type of religion, really. Christianity is all about love, compassion, forgiveness, understanding, and peace. Who could hate that? Who could say that those values were wrong or immoral? Yet, everywhere I turn I see people, the press, tv shows, and music poking fun at Christianity.

So I’ve been thinking into this. Why do people make fun of Christians? How can so many people find flaws and criticize the world’s largest religion? Besides it being the largest religion, that personally affects me considering it’s my lifestyle, my choice, and Christ is my savior.

So I’ve developed two possible scenarios as to why Christians are put in the limelight of hatred:

1. Christians oftentimes forget to love others (especially the nonbelievers) and to treat others as you would like to be treated. Part of the reason so many people despise Christianity is because they misunderstand what all Christianity entails. They believe Christians are judgmental, arrogant, and unforgiving. Unfortunately, they’re not too far off. All too often as Christians we forget to treat everyone with respect and turn our noses to those who don’t share our faith. We solemnly profess that we’ll never forgive those who have wronged us. And we openly declare that the nonbelievers are going to hell. But what do these proclamations say about Christians? That we are hypocrites? Liars? Unforgiving, judgmental, and hard to love? While we all fall victim to sin, as Christians we are forgetting to love those who aren’t and quite frankly that gives Christianity as a whole a bad connotation.

2. Perhaps the second reason is that Christianity is the world’s largest religion. So it makes Christians an easy target. People find it humorous and delightful to take part in mocking Christians. Because there are so many of us and Christianity has been around for so long, it’s not hard to find flaws in the religion. Especially since there have been numerous instances of hypocrisy, sex scandals, corruption, and more from quite a few Christians since nearly the beginning of time. Therefore, people immediately believe that all Christians are bad. Or that the Church is corrupt. However, these things are not true. Christians and Christianity are just all too frequently misunderstood.

Furthermore, in the Bible it says that Christians would be hated, mocked, even persecuted for following Jesus. But earthly persecution and hate are what draw us closer to Him and deepen our faith and trust in Him. It’s not easy, but it’s worth it.

If the world hates you, know that it hated me before it hated you. -John 15:18
