Why I Created a Blog (And Why You Should, Too)

Five years ago, during the summer between my freshmen and sophomore years of high school, I started my first blog (of the same name, but unfortunately no longer exists). I was a wide-eyed 15-year-old with aspirations to become a journalist. 2 years ago, after a somewhat large hiatus from the blogosphere, I created this blog for the sole purpose of refining and publishing my writing, as well as to share my life with the world. Looking back, this was one of the best decisions I could have possibly made, and I’m a firm believer that a blog could be a great tool for just about anyone.

1. Share your life with the world

It’s pretty awesome to think that with each blog post I write there is the potential for anyone in the world with access to a computer to read what I write. They can read my thoughts and opinions, agree or disagree. They can even celebrate with me in my victories, and watch me work through my falls. In the past two years that I have been posting on this blog, I have gotten over 25,000 views. 25,000. That’s a pretty big number for me, especially since I was a little uneasy when creating this blog. I wasn’t sure who would want to read my posts! But now I know that I have supporters all over the place, and that’s pretty awesome.

2. Refine your writing

If you’re anything like me, you probably write whenever you get the chance to. I write in random notebooks I find lying around my room and long forgotten at the bottom of my backpack. I write a page-long story in Microsoft Word. I write Tweets, Instagram captions, and Facebook statuses. I write essays for classes. But most importantly, I write blog posts. It gives me the opportunity to refine my writing, especially since I really have to think about what I’m writing, and who I’m writing it for. I have to think about my audience. Even if you’re not a great writer, starting a blog could be a great tool.

3. Use it as a resume enhancer

Especially for communications-related majors like me, what looks better than saying you maintain your own personal blog? If you have an empty space in your resume and are looking for something to fill that void, a personal blog may be the perfect solution. Also, if you’re just looking for some career and real-world experience, a personal blog may also be the perfect solution. You can write field-specific topics, or practice writing in a professional matter. Whatever your need may be, a blog may be a great solution.

4. Share your voice 21st century style

If you’re vocal and opinionated, a blog may also be the route for you. You can discuss politics, religion, and dreams. You can talk about what you’re most passionate about, you can talk about what upsets you. Whatever it may be, a blog is a great forum to get your opinions out there.

Although it hasn’t always been easy, it’s been a great two years blogging. Sometimes an idea hits me and it only takes me two hours the knock out the perfect posts. Other times, it takes me days to write a post. I have written so many that I’ve never published because they just weren’t right. Nevertheless, blogging has become one of my new favorite hobbies and I hope to post more in the future. Happy blogging!
